The Nokia 3310 was for many their very first phone, it was mine. From the colors to the freedom a mobile represented, the Nokia really is one of my key memories of youth and was quite extraordinary worldwide. Here we are going to look at 18 facts about this humble yet ground-breaking mobile phone.

  1. Compared to today, the battery of the Nokia 3310 is quite literally awe-inspiring, my phone barely lasts a day without needing a full overnight charge. The 3310 was capable of 55-hours talk time, that’s more than 2 solid days, and 245 hour standby time, an astounding 10 days!
  2. The average smartphone to date takes around 20 seconds to boot up from off to ready for action, the Nokia took a mind-blowing 8 seconds before you could crack open the messenger or the built in currency converter.
  3. In Finland, the Nokia 3310 (called the indestructible) was inducted into their culture in the best way possible, the 3310 was chosen as a national emoji to represent the country alongside a rocker and a sauna. The Finnish have their priorities in order.
  4. After 17 years, Nokia agreed to release a literal representation of every millennia’s childhood nostalgia. The new 3310 was a bit of let-down though, with its sleek lines and touch screen display, many people were less than pleased… on the plus side it does have snake.
  5. Snake, the icon of mobile gaming during the 1990s, is officially the most played mobile game of all time, securing a Guinness world record in 2010 after achieving over 1 billion players. The game can be beaten though; in 2013, a GIF image appeared claiming to show an unknown Russian player’s amazing feat, but some question whether it was a hoax or not.
  6. The Nokia 3310 has even saved lives according to social media. A soldier who was stationed in Afghanistan took a bullet to the chest only to be saved by his trusty 3310, the bullet remained lodged in the phone and the man walked away unscathed.
  7. At its release, the Nokia 3310 was seen as the new face of technological development. With an internal antenna, the surface measurements smaller than the average house brick and all the latest technology, the 3310 was the face of business.
  8. The ability to change the case, and a range of other settings just wasn’t enough for Nokia’s customizable dreams. Through a built-in app called ‘the composer’, the app told you  to press different numbers for different sounds so users could make their own ringtones and learn a little musical knowledge along the way.
  9. When the initial 3310 was released it cost $166 (£129), which would make the mind boggle today. On its revamp, it’s available for a mere $55 (£42) but it’s nowhere near as ground-breaking.
  10. The 3310 really did break the mold in a range of ways, when it came to messaging the Nokia outdid all its rivals by having a messaging character limit of an unbelievable 459, that’s 3 times the normal limit for that era. The standard today is 160 characters.
  11. The 3310 quite rightly holds the title of indestructible, if you drop a modern phone they’ll instantly shatter into a million pieces (or at least it feels that way). The 3310 has been run over by a train, dropped from eye-watering heights and even faced power tools and still prevailed.
  12. Nokia were one of the first cell phone providers to offer the earliest version of an autocorrect system called predictive text input. Pressing a key gave a list of options, making messaging easy, but for many this functionality was infuriating, so documentation was released on how to turn it off.
  13. When the iPhone went on sale it sold a colossal 25 million units, or you would say its colossal until someone tells you the Nokia 3310 sold over 400% more, at a whopping 126 million units!
  14. The 3310 had one of the widest range of covers available to it, quite literally thousands. Made by an array of companies, the Xpress-On covers were a great way to show a person’s character and really make you look cool.
  15. In the UK, The Sun newspaper released an amazing story of a man who had bought a 3310 when they first came out back in 2000 and now, 17 years on, the Yorkshireman is still using his trusty favorite and doesn’t even care about its technological inferiority.
  16. The minimalist 3310 was designed at the Nokia Site in Copenhagen, Denmark with a strong focus on suiting to people’s needs, not forcing them to adopt a new way of life like many other big brands of the day were doing. Just look at the simplistic display and layout to realize this is true.
  17. In 2012, the innocent Nokia became wrapped up in a violent riot. A Protestor in Jakarta, Indonesia, complaining about the abhorrent price of fuel, used the sturdy piece of tech as a projectile launching it at police.
  18. The Nokia 3310 was the first phone to allow a user to internet chat, a daydream to most teens of the time. Debuted at numerous concerts worldwide, this little feature really did draw an immense amount of interest. When set in ‘chat mode’ users could send and receive messages in enhanced SMS format.

Like everything nostalgic, from penny sweets to the PS1, it’s never as good as you remember it. If we loved our 3310’s so very much, why aren’t we all still using one? Simple, we developed our technological ability and it became moot. The newer 3310 was somewhat of a flop with many people cooing over its sentimentality but staggered by the price and minimalistic features. One things for sure, if you revampers touch my Gameboy, I won’t be happy!

Here we’re going to look at 30 amazing facts about the owner of everybody’s favorite Pikachu, Ash Ketchum.

  1. Ash Ketchum, one of the most popular and recognizable Pokémon characters, is known as Satoshi in Japan, sharing his name with the creator of Pokémon.
  2. Satoshi Tajiri, the creator, based Ash loosely on himself, it would appear. As well as giving him the same name, he also loved the outdoors and getting involved in adventure.
  3. The name Satoshi means ‘wisdom’ or ‘reason’ in Japanese.
  4. He was originally going to be called Kasey, but this was changed early on, therefore he has always been known as Satoshi.
  5. He was the main protagonist for the Pokémon comics.
  6. His birthday is the 22nd May 1986, and avid Pokémon fans around the world love to remember this date. This date is taken from the fact he was 10 years, 10 months and 10 days old when he met Pikachu.
  7. His surname ‘Ketchum’ comes from the popular phrase ‘gotta catch ’em all!
  8. All over Europe, he is known as Ash Ketchum, but in France, they call him Sacha Ketchum, and in Lithuania, he is referred to as Esas Keciumas.
  9. In the comics, both his father and grandfather have histories of being Pokémon trainers, just like Ash.
  10. It was thought that Ash Ketchum would catch all the Pokémon, but across 60 episodes, he only managed to get 40 of them.
  11. From 1998 to 2006, he was voiced by Veronica Taylor and then Sarah Natochenny from 2006 onwards.
  12. He has not aged throughout the Pokémon series. When it began, Ash was 10 years old and the latest Pokémon comics reveal that he is still 10 years old.
  13. Apart from apparently never ageing, Ash has died a total of three times throughout the series, but also returned full of life and energy.
  14. Throughout the years, he has teamed up with many other characters, including Brock and Misty.
  15. Ash travelled to a total of seven different Pokémon regions, and gained an impressive 52 badges during his travels.
  16. Although he has many adoring fans, lots of Pokémon lovers dislike Ash Ketchum as they believe he is a bad Pokémon trainer.
  17. However, the fact he has defeated four of the legendary Pokémon means that he has, in fact, had several impressive achievements.
  18. It’s difficult to say who the favorite Pokémon of Ash Ketchum would be, since this is never clearly stated in the comics. Most fans believe it is either the famous Pikachu or the loyal Goodra.
  19. When Pokémon Go took the world by storm in 2016, Hollywood wanted to produce a live-action movie which would not include Ash Ketchum.
  20. The only video game Ash has appeared in is the Pokémon Puzzle League, way back in 2000 when the Nintendo 64 was on the top of everyone’s Christmas list.
  21. Although Ash has been compared to the character Red many times, he isn’t strongly based on him. Red was one of the greatest trainers ever, while Ash is a mere mortal!
  22. His mother is called Delia Ketchum, but we are never told the name of his father. His mother once wanted to be a Pokémon trainer too, but when she fell pregnant with Ash, started running the family restaurant instead.
  23. Veronica Taylor, as well as voicing Ash himself, also voiced his mother Delia for the duration of her time on the show.
  24. Clefairy almost became the character that Pokémon fans grew to know and love, but during the development stages, producers thought Pikachu would be a better choice for Ash’s iconic Pokémon.
  25. The reason Pikachu became Ash’s main character was because yellow is brighter and more noticeable, particularly since the comic was aimed at children.
  26. His was the pitcher on his basketball team, which probably explains his great technique at throwing Pokéballs.
  27. Gary Oak wasn’t always the enemy of Ash Ketchum. They used to be very good friends until they had a fight over who would keep a Pokéball.
  28. Ash never received a Squirtle since he overslept, and he ended up with Pikachu since this was the only Pokémon left.
  29. After winning at the Battle Pyramid, Ash could have become a Frontier Brain, but declined the offer.
  30. Ash’s favorite color is dark green.

So now you know the most fun facts about Pokémon’s Ash Ketchum – you’ll be amazed at what else you recognize when you go back and watch the series again!

When Pokémon started back in 1996, it was an instant hit. People had their favorite characters, and when Pokémon Go surfaced in 2016, it brought all the memories back and made people remember some of the most popular Pokémon characters.

If you ever ask anyone to name a physicist, I can all but guarantee you they will name Albert Einstein. The physicist was revolutionary, changing the way we thought about the entire world both visible and invisible. He helped win the war and discovered our universe.

Here we have 25 facts about the scientific legend, Albert Einstein.

  1. At birth, Einstein actually startled his mother as he had an abnormally big head; of course as time went on it shrank to a ‘normal’ size.
  2. Compared to an average brain, Einstein’s Parietal lobe (the part concerned with handling sensory information) was a whopping 15% larger than normal.
  3. Einstein, like all amazing people, had some quirks. He never wore socks as he deemed them useless.
  4. Einstein loved the violin, claiming if he wasn’t a scientist he would be a musician as he lives, thinks and sees his life in music.
  5. Einstein paid his wife Mileva his entire prize money from his Nobel Prize, a staggering $32,250 which was vastly more than a professor’s salary back then.
  6. Einstein married his cousin, his second wife Elsa was actually his first cousin and her middle name was even Einstein.
  7. For the discovery of the law of photoelectric effect and his work with Theoretical Physics, Albert received the 1921 Physics Nobel Prize.
  8. Einstein’s first marriage to the mother of his child, Mileva Maric, lasted 16 years and had a contract outlining terms and conditions including the receipt of ‘3 meals a day to his room’.
  9. He was born on 14th March 1879 in Ulm, Württemberg, Germany. Einstein was classed as a German, Austrian, American and Swiss, and even stateless throughout his life.
  10. A depressed parrot was the focus of Einstein’s interest during the scientists 70’s. He told it jokes to try and make it less depressed.
  11. Early in his life, he evaluated patents for electromagnetic devices in a patent office.
  12. Einstein’s violin was named Lina.
  13. Einstein had a useless memory; he often forgot names, faces and dates.
  14. A document focusing on the scientists association with pacifists and socialists was collated by the FBI in 1933; it stood a whopping 1,427 pages high.
  15. Edgar Hoover tried to keep Einstein out of the country only to be overruled by the U.S. State Department.
  16. As Einstein neared the end of his life in 1952, the scientist was actually given the opportunity to become president of Israel but being his usual pacifist self, he turned the job down.
  17. Even though he will be remembered for his work with relativity, Einstein received his Nobel for his work with the Photoelectric effect.
  18. In New York – buried away in a safe box – lies Einstein’s eyeballs after they were given to Henry Adams; the scientists eye doctor.
  19. Einstein’s wrinkles and eyes appeared in Star Wars after the make-up supervisor responsible for Yoda based the features on the visionary.
  20. Einstein loved to smoke; he smoked a pipe and claimed that it helps calm and focus a man.
  21. Like The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper, Albert Einstein refused to learn to drive.
  22. Einstein started tutoring youngsters around the turn of the century as his financial situation became so poor.
  23. For 20 years from 1913 to 1933, Einstein was director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics.
  24. Einstein Syndrome is the condition of delayed speech in those who are gifted. It was discovered by Dr. Thomas Sowell.
  25. Albert had mastered calculus by the tender age of 15.

A man who worked on his ideas until the day he died, a man who focused every minute of his life to science and discovery. Even his greatest blunder turned out to be revolutionary.

Whether you class the man as a crazy, deluded domestic abuser, or a scientific god among men responsible for almost every major breakthrough in the physics world, you have to respect the sheer intelligence and brilliance that was Albert Einstein.

Twitter’s temporary suspension of Rose McGowan’s account not only came at the worst time for the social media platform, but it drove many women to action. Though Twitter claimed the situation with McGowan was not due to her comments regarding Harvey Weinstein, many celebrities are supporting the day-long #WomenBoycottTwitter protest on Friday in support of those women whose voices have been silenced.

Starts now,” Scandal‘s Kerry Washington tweeted before going off the Twitter grid on Friday morning. Elizabeth Banks, too, noted she’s “taking a mental health break from Twitter,” while Gabrielle Union declared, “Let’s go.”

Others urged fans to follow them on Instagram in lieu of Twitter. “I stand with my sisters,” Gina Rodriguez wrote. “I won’t be live tweeting the premiere of Jane the Virgin tomorrow. Instead come on over to @instagram I’ll do BTS!”

Chrissy Teigen also joined in the protest and the comments she received after her announcement only proved her point.

“Ladies. Let’s do this,” she wrote initially. “#WomenBoycottTwitter. Not because of hate but because I love this platform and know it can be better.” According to screenshots she posted, her mentions were instantly filled with remarks like, “Are you a fan of a good butt spanking?”, “aight bitch leave,” and “It’s alright, Twitter is a better place without you easily offended feminist b—ches.”

McGowan’s account suspension came shortly after she told Ben Affleck to “f— off” over his remarks on Harvey Weinstein. She also claimed Affleck lied about his knowledge of the Weinstein sexual misconduct allegations against the disgraced movie mogul. After a backlash began brewing, Twitter released a series of tweets explaining that the Charmed actress was temporarily suspended because one of her tweets included a private phone number, which goes against the platform’s Terms of Service.

Various celebrities and online personalities slammed Twitter for silencing her voice and called out the platform’s apparent hypocrisy.

Ghostbusters director Paul Feig, for one, tweeted how President Trump “threatened to wipe out another country” with his tweets but did not get suspended. Others noted the seeming disconnect in Twitter’s policy as white supremacists and neo-Nazis are able to maintain their accounts, but McGowan tweeting a phone number is grounds for suspension.

“Twitter is proud to empower and support the voices on our platform, especially those that speak truth to power,” a statement from Twitter read after McGowan’s account was restored. “We stand with the brave women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices.”

McGowan boosted the #WomenBoycottTwitter protest on her own account. “MEN: if you are on here tomorrow, I urge you to AMPLIFY our voices,” she tweeted before going radio silent. “Call on your brothers to be better, go after ones who won’t. #ROSEARMY.”

A lot of celebrities joined the protest including Macy Gray, Mark Ruffalo, Questlove Gomez, Alyssa Milano, Nick Offerman and much more.

In a recent post on her Instagram account of Kardashian modeling a “leather-like” tight denim mini skirt and matching peplum top from her Good American brand, fans quickly began to comment that they could see a baby bump. But even though the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star quickly shut the speculation down, she did leave social media users with a bit of hope.

British actress Lysette Anthony has claimed Harvey Weinstein raped her. She reported the alleged assault to the police last week.

Anthony, who stars in the British soap opera “Hollyoaks,” said the rape took place in her home in London in the 1980s. She described the attack as “pathetic and revolting” and said it left her feeling “disgusted and embarrassed.”

Weinstein has denied previous accusations of criminal sexual harassment, rape and sexual assault.

A former Miramax employee has claimed Weinstein, the former boss of Miramax, raped her in the basement of his London office 25 years ago, in an interview with the Mail on Sunday.

The unnamed British woman explained why she didn’t report the assault. “I just felt mortified and ashamed – and that no one would believe me. He was incredibly well-connected, powerful and important – and I was just a nobody.”

Qualcomm has launched a new lawsuit against Apple, asking a Chinese court to block the sale and manufacturing of iPhones within the country, according to Bloomberg. This is the latest strike in a legal war between the two companies, which started out in the US and has since expanded worldwide.

In its lawsuit, Qualcomm reportedly claims that Apple is in violation of three patents, none of which are essential to any industry standards — meaning Qualcomm isn’t obligated to license them. “Apple employs technologies invented by Qualcomm without paying for them,” a Qualcomm spokesperson told Bloomberg. Those patents are said to cover power management and the iPhone’s Force Touch feature.

In a statement, Apple said the claims were “meritless,” and that it believed the effort would fail. It suggested the effort was opportunistic, because Qualcomm hadn’t brought up the patents during negotiations and had only issued them recently.

“Apple believes deeply in the value of innovation, and we have always been willing to pay fair and reasonable rates for patents we use. In our many years of ongoing negotiations with Qualcomm, these patents have never been discussed and in fact were only granted in the last few months,” an Apple spokesperson said. “Regulators around the world have found Qualcomm guilty of abusing their position for years. This claim is meritless and, like their other courtroom maneuvers, we believe this latest legal effort will fail.”

This is Qualcomm’s second attempt to get a ban on iPhone sales. In July, it filed a similar claim in the US, pointing to six patents that it said Apple was in violation of.

It seems exceedingly unlikely that sales of any iPhones will be banned. Rather, this mostly seems to be an attempt to get back at Apple for many lawsuit it’s filed against Qualcomm around the globe. It could also give Qualcomm some leverage when negotiating the outcome of those suits.

This legal battle kicked off in January, when Apple filed a lawsuit claiming that Qualcomm was holding payments for ransom. The filing was prompted by a lawsuit from the Federal Trade Commission, which claimed that Qualcomm was abusing its market position to get more money when selling its smartphone modems, since it’s by far the dominant supplier. Apple proceeded to file suits making similar claims around the globe, and Qualcomm fired back in various places contending patent infringement.

Things are not looking particularly good for Qualcomm. It’s been repeatedly fined for similar behaviors, with the latest ruling coming down yesterday, when it was fined $774 million by Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission.

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 and S8+ are top notch Android handsets, but the Galaxy S9 is set to be even better

We’re still getting to grips with the top-notch Android handset that is Samsung’s Galaxy S8. This is the de-facto smartphone, with top-end internals, a wonderful edge-to-edge display and a camera that’s best in its class. Why then, are we already discussing the Samsung Galaxy S9?

Well, because it’s starting to look the Galaxy S9 will blow its predecessor clean out of the water. Fresh rumours indicate that Samsung’s latest flagship will be the first smartphone to feature Qualcomms’s as-yet-unannounced Snapdragon 845 processor. A Geekbench 4 leak back in September 2017 highlighted the Galaxy S9’s single-core processing score, with the Snapdragon 845 processor attached to it. In case you were interested, the Galaxy S9 recorded a score of over 2,600, a dramatic improvement over the processing grunt of the Galaxy S8.

Samsung has a difficult task ahead. Apple’s impressive iPhone X is mere weeks away from release, and Google’s top-tier Pixel 2 handset launches very soon, too. Samsung faces stiff competition with the Galaxy S9, especially considering the S8 and S8+ have both seen drastic price reductions since their release.

That being said, here’s absolutely everything you need to know about Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ handsets, including UK release date, price, specifications, design and features.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ UK price and release date: When will the flagship phones come out?

  • Expected around March 2017
  • Around £700 for the S9 and £800 for S9+

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ were pretty expensive when they were released, even for a flagship phone: at £679 and £779 respectively, they were bordering on iPhone territory. But if you’re hoping the S9 and S9+ will be cheaper, you’re probably going to be disappointed. The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ were a huge success at the current price point, so Samsung has no reason to reduce the price of the S9. What’s more, it’s very unusual to see a manufacturer reduce the price of a new handset – usually, the RRP just goes upwards with each new release.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ have been a huge success at the current price point, so Samsung has no reason to reduce the price of the S9 or S9+. What’s more, it’s very unusual to see a manufacturer reduce the price of a new handset – usually, the RRP just goes upwards with each new release.

Samsung generally releases its phones at MWC or at its own dedicated events later in the year. If Samsung is planning to unveil the Samsung S9 at Mobile World Congress or MWC, we should see this in February 2018. If Samsung decides to do what it did earlier this year, however, and release the S9 and S9+ at its own event, expect to see it in March or April of 2018. Judging by the release date of the S8 and S9+, the latter seems most likely.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+: Specs at a glance

  • Expected March 2017

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 845
  • 6GB of RAM
  • 18.5:9 aspect ratio
  • HDR display
  • Rear-mounted fingerprint reader
  • Two 12-megapixel cameras with 10x optical zoom and 1,000fps
  • Waterproof
  • Better battery life over the S8 and S9 respectively
  • Integration with Bixby
  • 64GB internal space (up to 256GB)
  • USB 3.1 Type-C
  • No headphone jack
  • Android 8

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ specs: Are they going to be faster than the S8 and S8+?

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ processor

Given the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S*+ are still pretty new, it’s unsurprising that there isn’t too much to go on the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+. The Investor reckons that it’s going to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, but given that doesn’t exist yet, it’s not much to go on – except that it will presumably be faster and more power efficient than the Snapdragon 835 that powers the S8 in the US.

Outside of the US, Samsung powers phones with its own Exynos chips and the company has announced that its latest batch will support up to six carrier aggregation (6CA). That’s a lot of words, but what do they mean? Well, theoretically any phone that uses it – and the S9 and S9+ are very likely to benefit from this – could get download speeds of up to 1.2Gbps. For comparison, the Exynos 9 processor used in the UK S8 offered 5CA.

According to a recent leak on GeekBench, an early version of the alleged Galaxy S9 was spotted in July, seven or eight months before we could even see the launch of the phone. A device with the model name SM-G9650 was listed with a 1.78GHz quad-core Snapdragon 845 processor and just 4GB of RAM – more than the 6GB some have rumoured it to have. According to the benchmark, it scored 7371 points in the RenderScript test, which is lower than what the Galaxy S8 managed in the same test, oddly. We’d expect 6GB of RAM in the latest Samsung phone, in order to keep up with heavy multi-tasking needs of consumers.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ camera

The well-known KGI Securities analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, who has correctly predicted many launches and specs (notably from Apple), anticipates the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will feature a dual-lens camera. This follows the footsteps of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 that features two 12-megapixel cameras, one with an aperture of f/1.7, the other with f/2.4. According to Korean IT site, ET News, Samsung will also feature a sensor capable of shooting at 1,000fps. This would allow super slow-mo videos, close to what is seen on the Sony Xperia XZ Premium, which has a sensor capable of 960fps.

It’s logical that Samsung sticks to a similar camera design with the Galaxy S9 and S9+. Some suggest the South Korea manufacturer might opt for a telephoto lens for its secondary lens, which will give it 10x optical zoom, making it superior to the iPhone 8 which currently stands at only 2x optical zoom.

Following the launch of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, we’d expect Samsung to also step up its camera with improved post-processing capabilities.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ display

As with the Galaxy S8 and S8+, we’d expect the S9 and S9+ to come with a beautiful display, which will have an 18.5:9 aspect ratio and an HDR display. This will mean two things: A bright display and one that is colour accurate. There is a slight chance the phone might be bendable too – but we’re banking on this feature being exclusively used on the Note range-only.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ fingerprint sensor

Expect to see a fingerprint sensor included. Its placement is most probably going to be around the back of the phone, as it was with the S8. However, we hope it’ll be positioned a little better this time around. Given the release of the iPhone X, which uses your face to unlock the device (through Face ID) we could even see a complete removal of the fingerprint sensor, in favour of a similar design.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ waterproofing

As with the S8 and S8+ that are IP68 certified protecting them from dust and water at a depth of 1.5m for 30mins, we’d expect the S9 and S9+ to follow suit.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ storage

64GB of internal storage comes as standard on the S8 and S8+ and given the massive allocation of space that already includes, we won’t be surprised if Samsung were to keep the same amount for the S9 and S9+. We might even see larger storage options, such as a massive 256GB phone too.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ connectivity

The phones will connect via a USB 3.1 Type-C port. It is rumoured Samsung might ditch the 3.5mm jack too – which might upset a few, but given the current trend, we might have to deal with the latest Samsung phone coming without it.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ might feature a Samsung-branded artificial intelligence chip. According to the Korean Herald, the new AI chip will help the phone connect to smart home appliances.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ Android

Android 8.0 was released not long ago, and given the update cycle of the Samsung phones, expect to see Android 8, or maybe 8.1 included on the S9 and S9+

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ battery

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ have a formidably good battery life, the Plus variant housing a 3,500mAh battery, over its 3,000mAh sibling. Improved battery life would be a much welcome addition to the new 2018 line of flagship phones – so here’s us hoping Samsung has optimised their upcoming flagship phones to reflect that.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+: Things we’d like to see

At this point, there aren’t many rumours about what to expect from the Galaxy S9 and S9+. Here’s what we’d like to see on the new Samsung.

Less fragile design

One of the best things about the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are their bezel-less edge-to-edge screen, but in practice, that’s also one of its worst features. It might look great for the first 30 minutes, or on the internet, but as soon as you drop the S8 or S8+ you’ll find that edge-to-edge screen splinters into 1,000 pieces. When Samsung releases the S9 and S9+, we’re hoping they’ll be just as pretty, but also a little more durable.

Better fingerprint sensor

Smartphones are pretty hard to design because of just how many things manufacturers need to include in them. Take the phone you’re using now, for instance. There’s a camera, screen, fingerprint scanner, speakers, memory, battery and so much more to squeeze in – and that means sometimes things end up in less than optimal places.

Now, we love the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, but its fingerprint sensor is directly next to the camera lens, which means you can miss and smudge your lens, and it does get pretty frustrating. We’re hoping the S9 and S9+ have a fingerprint lens that is much easier to reach.

Make Bixby great, again

When we first heard about Bixby, we expected a new type of AI that was much more sophisticated than Siri and would even give something like Alexa a run for its money. What we got instead, though, was something more like Clippit. Hopefully, Samsung will improve it in the S9 and S9+.

Bixby has since launched on the Note 8, and Galaxy S8 and S8+ phones, but we’ve yet to test its capabilities.

Rollout starts with Pixel, Pixel 2, Android One, and Nexus phones

Google is rolling out simpler video calling on mobile for Android users. Those wanting to make a video call will be able do so straight from the Phone, Contacts, and Android Messages apps. The integration is as tight as you’d expect (as seen in the GIF above) with the option to start video presented in the same list of options where you’d call or text a contact. Google says it will add a function later that allows you to upgrade an ongoing voice call to video with a single tap.

When the video call is made, it’ll be routed through your carrier’s ViLTE service (video over LTE). If you’re not on a carrier with that service, Google will link the call through its Duo app, as long as both parties have it installed. The integrated video calling feature is already rolling out to Pixel, Pixel 2, Android One, and Nexus phones. Google is working with carriers to make the feature available on other Android devices, but the company hasn’t given a specific timeline.
